Fire Ants found in new parts of the Sunshine Coast
Posted by Nick Hutchinson on 22nd Jan 2025
We’re passing on an important update from the Nursery & Garden Industry Qld (NGIQ) regarding the detection of Red Imported Fire Ants in the North Arm area.
NGIQ has been in contact with senior leaders of the National Fire Ant Eradication Program (NFAEP) to advocate for the interests of nurseries and greenlife businesses.
Please contact NFAEP if you need information or advice about the detection.
Below is the information and advice provided by NGIQ to help you understand the situation and take any necessary steps:
What You Need to Know
- Suspected fire ant nests were found in a new development area and confirmed as fire ants on Friday – see the map far below. Authorities are investigating to determine the source of the ants. There is no reason to believe our industry was a source of the ants.
- The nests have been treated by direct injection (fipronil).
- NGIQ has been reassured that nurseries around the detection area can continue to operate unless fire ants are detected at their premises.
- If declared a biosecurity zone, nurseries within it will be required to implement fire ant safe practices. Use this fire ant compliance tool and subscribe to the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to ensure compliance with legislation.
- NFAEP biosecurity officers will notify residents and businesses where the ants were found. They will also inspect high-risk areas, which may include nurseries.
- NFAEP staff are authorised to treat affected properties.
What You Should Do
- Check for fire ants or nests on and around your nursery. Here’s what to look for. Report any suspected sightings online or by calling 13 22 68.
- Cooperate with officials to help eradicate fire ants from your property or surroundings.
- Spread the word to neighbours, growers, and other greenlife businesses, especially those who may not receive official updates.
- Consider adopting fire ant safe practices even if you are outside the biosecurity area.
- Take advantage of NFAEP’s training and tools to protect your business and help stop the spread.
NGIQ is available to support you. If you have concerns about this detection, the fire ant program, or need representation, please contact NGIQ’s CEO directly at ceo@ngiq.asn.au or 0409 622 297.
Thank you for your continued diligence in managing this important biosecurity issue. Together, we can help protect our industry and help prevent the spread of fire ants.
