// What is Esplanade Herbicide? Esplanade Herbicide is a pre-emergent herbicide that offers long-lasting control of over 30 species of annual grass and broadleaf weeds and sedges at a low application rate. Esplanade is used primarily in vegetation management (VM) applications such as railroads, utility substations and roadside rights-of-way, among others. Esplanade may also be used pre-plant and post-plant for weed control in forestry plantations.
// What are the key benefits? Esplanade provides long-term residual control of over 30 weed species including grasses, broadleaf weeds and sedges. Esplanade provides outstanding pre-emergent residual control of weeds so that fewer post-emergent herbicide applications are required as well as less frequent early-season mowing and reduced labour and fuel costs. Esplanade may also be used to promote growth of warm-season grasses in low-maintenance industrial areas such as along roadsides, rights-of-way and around airports.
// What does pre-emergent mean? A pre-emergent herbicide must be applied before germination (emergence) of the weed seed. A partner herbicide will be required if weeds have germinated at the time of Esplanade application.
// What is the mode of action? Indaziflam, the active ingredient in Esplanade, is a Group O herbicide which means it is a cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor. Indaziflam works by inhibiting cellulose deposition in the plant cell wall which affects cell wall formation and disrupts normal root growth and development. Esplanade only impacts meristematic root and shoot tissue of germinating weeds, inhibiting seedling emergence and root development. As a result, Esplanade will have limited, or no, post-emergence activity on plants. Post-emergence activity, if present, may appear as yellowing or necrosis of leaf tissue.

// What is the active ingredient? Esplanade contains 500 g/L of the active ingredient indaziflam, which is one of the most effective and residual pre-emergent herbicides available.
// How is Esplanade different to other pre-emergent herbicides? Esplanade has a unique mode of action and is therefore very effective against weed species that may have developed resistance to other commonly used herbicides. Esplanade provides long term residual activity which reduces the number of applications needed in a season, saving the user time and money. Esplanade is applied at a low use rate of 150 mL/ha.
// Which weeds does Esplanade control? Esplanade has been shown in Australian trials to control more than 30 species of annual grasses, broadleaf weeds and sedges as listed on the product label. Esplanade does not control tubers, rhizomes or woody vegetation and does not generally control weeds which have already emerged.
// Where can Esplanade be applied? Esplanade is used primarily in vegetation management (VM) applications such as railroads, utility substations, and roadside rights-of-way, among others. Esplanade may also be used pre-plant and post-plant for weed control in forestry plantations. Esplanade may be used only in non-crop situations and is not approved for use on any food or feed crop.
// Do I need to water-in after application? No. Esplanade requires rainfall (minimum 6 mm) within several weeks after application to activate the herbicide. Weed control may be reduced if the product is not activated by rainfall prior to weed germination.
// How quickly does Esplanade work? Once the active ingredient moves to the soil, Esplanade begins to work immediately. Extremely dry soil conditions may delay herbicide activity.
// Are there any label restrictions?
- DO NOT apply with spray droplets smaller than a COARSE spray droplet size.
- DO NOT apply by aircraft.
- DO NOT apply with a nozzle height greater than 50cm above the ground.
- DO NOT apply through any type of irrigation equipment.
- DO NOT irrigate to the point of runoff for at least 3 days after application.
- DO NOT apply to waterlogged soil.
- DO NOT apply if heavy rains or storms are forecast within 3 days.
- DO NOT apply if there are sensitive crops, gardens, landscaping vegetation, protected native vegetation or protected animal habitat within 40 metres downwind from the application area.
- DO NOT apply if there are aquatic or wetland areas including aqua-cultural ponds, surface streams and rivers within 10 metres downwind from the application area.
// How is Esplanade packaged? Esplanade is packaged in a 1L plastic bottle.
// What personal protective equipment (PPE) is required? When opening the container, mixing, loading and using the prepared spray, wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist (or equivalent clothing). If applying by equipment carried on the back of the user wear cotton overalls buttoned to the neck and wrist (or equivalent clothing) and elbow-length chemical resistant gloves. Wash hands after use. After each day’s use, wash gloves and contaminated clothing.

// Can I use Esplanade with my existing weed control program? Yes. Esplanade is compatible with a range of other herbicides. Esplanade is recommended to be used in combination with a registered herbicide if weeds have germinated at the time of application or the weed spectrum is not covered by the use of Esplanade alone. Esplanade applied in combination with a post-emergent non-selective herbicide will provide excellent knockdown plus residual weed control.
// What is the optimum timing for the application of Esplanade? Esplanade is a highly effective, broad-spectrum pre-emergent herbicide which works best when applied to bare ground with no vegetation present prior to weed seed germination. A tank mix with a post-emergent herbicide is required if weeds are present at time of application.
// What is the difference between Esplanade and Specticle®? Esplanade and Specticle are different products. Bayer recommends that each and every registered product is used only in accordance with its registered product label.
// How can Esplanade help me manage resistance issues? Not only have many of the current pre-emergent herbicides been on the market for many years, many in use have the same mode of action. Esplanade, on the other hand, has a new mode of action for pre-emergent weed control and will provide another “tool in the tool box” for resistance management.
// What is the use rate of Esplanade?

// Is there a Slope Restriction on the label? To reduce run-off from treated areas, avoid application to areas with overall moderate (e.g. 12.5% - 20%) to steep (e.g. >20%) slopes. Run-off may be reduced by including a vegetative strip between the treated area and the edge of the water body.
// What are the health and environment safety profiles? When used in accordance with the registered product label, Esplanade does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment. Esplanade has a very low acute oral, and low dermal and inhalational toxicity. It is neither an irritant nor a sensitiser to the skin but is a slight eye irritant. Esplanade is a schedule 6 poison. Esplanade is very toxic to aquatic life and has a mean soil half-life (field) of approximately 150 days. Refer to safety data sheet. Always use product according to the registered label.
// Can I mix Esplanade with other products? Yes. Esplanade is known to be compatible with other herbicide products that are currently on the market. As the formulations of other manufacturers’ products are beyond the control of Bayer, it is recommended to conduct a compatibility test to assess physical compatibility of any potential tank mix partner prior to mixing commercial quantities. Refer to label.
// How does Esplanade impact honeybees or other pollinators? When applied as per the label there is minimal to no risk for bees and other pollinators. It is recommended as a matter of good agricultural practice not to spray while bees are actively foraging. Before spraying, move any hives to a safe location, if there is potential for them to be affected by the spray or spray drift.
// Is Esplanade safe to use around crops and non-target plants? As per the label, “no spray” zones should be adhered to at all times, including when applying adjacent to crops and other sensitive vegetation. DO NOT use clippings from treated areas for mulch around vegetables or fruit trees.
// Can I use Esplanade off-label? No. Bayer recommends that Esplanade is always used according to the registered label.
