Earthworms are generally beneficial soil organisms whose surface castings can become a nuisance on fine turf.

Earthworms are segmented soil-dwelling invertebrates belonging to the family Lumbricidae, along with related native and introduced families found in Australian soils. Adults are typically 5–20 cm long depending on species, cylindrical, tapering slightly at each end, with a smooth, moist, pinkish-brown to reddish body divided into visible ring-like segments. A thickened band called the clitellum sits roughly a third of the way along the body and is used in reproduction. Juveniles look like smaller, paler versions of adults and hatch directly from small amber-coloured egg capsules laid in the soil; there is no larval stage as earthworms develop by direct growth rather than metamorphosis.

Earthworms live within the soil profile, moving between the surface and deeper layers through burrows they create as they feed on organic matter, decaying plant material and soil microbes. They are most active and visible at the surface after rain or irrigation, when moist conditions allow them to move without drying out, and they retreat deeper during dry or cold periods.

In turf, garden beds and nursery growing media across Australia, earthworms are considered beneficial. Their burrowing improves soil aeration, drainage and water infiltration, while their casts recycle nutrients and organic matter into a more plant-available form. Populations tend to be higher in soils with good organic matter content, adequate moisture and minimal disturbance from cultivation or pesticide use.

Management is rarely warranted, as earthworms do not damage living plant tissue, turfgrass roots or leaves. Where surface castings become a cosmetic or playability issue on fine turf such as bowling greens or golf greens, management is usually cultural rather than chemical — regular mowing, brushing or dew-sweeping to disperse casts, light topdressing, and maintaining moderate soil moisture and thatch levels to reduce the conditions that encourage heavy casting activity.

How to identify

  • Surface castings: small mounds or coils of fine, worked soil deposited on the turf or bed surface, most noticeable after rain or irrigation and on close-mown turf.
  • Softened or slightly uneven surface: heavy casting activity can create a slightly lumpy or muddy playing surface on fine turf, and casts can smear under mower wheels if not dispersed before mowing.
  • Burrow openings: small round holes at the soil surface, sometimes with a casting beside them, marking the entrance to a worm burrow.
  • Confirming the organism: dig a small spade of soil or turf profile after rain and inspect for the smooth, segmented, pinkish-brown worms; they are easily distinguished from soil-dwelling insect larvae by their lack of legs, head capsule or body segments bearing legs.
  • Lookalikes: earthworm castings are sometimes mistaken for ant nest mounds, but ant mounds are drier, granular and often have a visible entrance hole with ant activity, whereas worm casts are moist, smooth-textured soil with no insect activity around them. Surface mounding can also be confused with early symptoms of soil-dwelling beetle larvae, which is ruled out by the absence of any worm-like segmented body when the mound is dug into.
