Specticle Application on Warm Season Turf Grasses

Specticle is a broad spectrum long lasting pre-emergent herbicide. It provides outstanding control of broadleaf weeds and grass weeds like Winter grass, Summergrass and Crowsfoot grass.

Application Strategy

Season long weed control in turf can generally be obtained with 0.25 L of Specticle per hectare. While this can be applied in one application there are advantages to adopting a sequential application programme where two applications at lower rates are made. Sequential applications typically give better weed results because of improved coverage and providing a longer window of control.

Coverage is improved from sequential applications due to; → less chance of areas being missed due to application problems (weather conditions, blocked nozzles, uneven ground), → debris on the turf surface preventing the herbicide from reaching the soil surface, or → disruption of the herbicide barrier (machinery, divots etc).

A longer window of control is achieved because the applications are spread out over a longer period meaning the herbicide levels in the soil are maintained further into the weed germination period.

Adverse weather conditions like high rainfall leading to prolonged periods of high soil moisture conditions after herbicide application can increase loss and degradation of the active ingredient. Sequential application by spreading out the period of application can help maintain adequate herbicide levels in these conditions.

Example Programmes

The 0.25 L rate for season long control can be applied in a variety of combinations.

Two applications at 0.125 L applied at a 4-6 week intervals are recommended for turf grown in coarse or sandy soils. This reduces the risk of turf injury in these soils. This strategy has also proven to give better overall weed control and can be adopted for other soils and situations.

Treatment Tips for Best Results

Apply in 200-500 L water per ha. Maximum application of 0.5 L per ha per year. Tank mixing: If weeds are present at the time of application Specticle should be tank mixed with an appropriate registered post-emergent herbicide. A good practice for herbicide resistance management is to tank mix herbicides with different modes of action.

Trial Results

Trial at North Carolina State University showed improved Digitaria control with sequential applications.

Stewardship

• DO NOT apply to turf under stress.
• DO NOT apply with a nozzle height greater than 50 cm above the ground.
• DO NOT apply through any type of irrigation equipment.
• DO NOT apply if heavy rain or storms that are likely to cause run-off are forecast within 48 hours (golf courses) or 3 days (other areas).
• DO NOT apply to waterlogged soil.
• DO NOT irrigate turf to the point of run-off within 48 hours (golf courses) or 3 days (other areas of application).
