# White Clover

> White clover (Trifolium repens) is a creeping perennial broadleaf weed of turf, nursery surrounds and managed landscapes. Identify its stolons, three-leaflet leaves and white flower heads, then manage conditions that favour spread.

*Trifolium repens*

White clover is a creeping perennial broadleaf legume that spreads by above-ground stolons rooting at the nodes, forming dense mats that root into turf and garden beds. It has a shallow but persistent root system, and once established it is difficult to remove by hand as fragments of stolon can regenerate new plants.

The leaves are trifoliate (three leaflets per leaf) on long petioles, each leaflet oval to heart-shaped, mid-to-pale green, often with a pale V-shaped or crescent-shaped watermark near the base. Flower heads are white to pale pink, rounded and clover-like, held on upright stalks above the foliage, appearing mainly in spring and again in autumn under suitable moisture. Seed pods form after flowering, each containing several small, hard, yellow-to-brown seeds capable of persisting in soil for a number of years.

White clover is a common component of pastures, where it is valued as a nitrogen-fixing legume, but in turf, garden beds and amenity horticulture it is regarded as a weed because it disrupts sward uniformity, attracts bees during flowering (a hazard on recreational turf), and can outcompete desirable species in thin or under-fertilised turf.

It is widespread across temperate and cooler regions of Australia, including southern and highland areas, and tends to increase in turf and garden situations where nitrogen levels are low, soil moisture is adequate and mowing or maintenance keeps competing grasses weak. It thrives in compacted or poorly fertilised soils where turf density is reduced, giving it space to establish.

Management in professional turf and landscape settings relies on improving turf density and vigour through balanced fertility (particularly adequate nitrogen, which reduces clover's competitive advantage), correct mowing height, and addressing compaction or drainage issues. Selective herbicide control is commonly used where mechanical or cultural methods are insufficient, with product choice and timing dependent on the turf species and level of infestation.

## How to identify

- **Patchy, uneven turf appearance:** irregular clumps or mats of clover distinct from surrounding grass, often more noticeable when turf is mown short and clover growth stays low and dense.
- **Trifoliate leaves:** look for the characteristic three-leaflet leaf structure with a pale watermark, distinguishing it from grass and most other turf weeds.
- **White or pinkish rounded flower heads:** present mainly in spring and autumn; flowering areas can attract bees, a hazard on sports turf and public lawns.
- **Creeping stolons:** pull back a section of the mat to reveal horizontal stems rooting at nodes; this creeping habit helps distinguish it from upright broadleaf weeds.
- **Field check:** examine leaflets closely for the pale chevron marking and check for nodal rooting along prostrate stems to confirm identification.
- **Lookalikes:** can be confused with suckling clover (*Trifolium dubium*), which has yellow flowers and smaller leaflets, or black medic (*Medicago lupulina*), which also has yellow flowers and a slightly hairy stem — white clover is distinguished by its white/pink flowers and hairless, creeping stolons.
