# Mullumbimby Couch

Mullumbimby couch is a perennial sedge, not a true grass, that forms dense low mats in turf and garden beds. It spreads via short rhizomes and produces triangular stems typical of the Cyperaceae family, distinguishing it from grasses which have round or flattened stems.

The leaves are dark green, glossy, and narrow, arising in groups of three from the base of each stem, giving a slightly tufted appearance. The most distinctive feature is its seed head: a single, small, round to globular greenish-white cluster held on a triangular stem well above the leaf canopy, quite different from the flat seed heads of many grassy weeds. Root systems are shallow but form dense mats of fibrous roots and short rhizomes that allow the weed to persist even after mowing or light cultivation.

This weed is common across warmer, humid regions of Australia, particularly in coastal New South Wales and Queensland, thriving in moist, poorly drained soils and turf areas that are irrigated frequently or receive high rainfall. It is often found in home lawns, sports turf, and amenity horticulture settings where mowing height is low and soil moisture is consistently high.

Management relies on improving drainage, avoiding over-watering, and maintaining a dense, healthy turf sward that can outcompete the sedge. Because it spreads by rhizome fragments and can regenerate from small root sections, physical removal by hand-weeding or cultivation is often incomplete unless all rhizome material is removed. Selective herbicide options exist for use in turf, but timing and turf species tolerance must be carefully checked before use.

## How to identify

- Presence of dense, low-growing patches with a coarser, darker green texture than surrounding turf grass
- Distinct round, greenish-white seed heads on triangular stems rising above the mown turf canopy — most noticeable in warmer months
- Leaves emerging in groups of three from the base, unlike the parallel-veined single blades of most turf grasses
- Triangular (not round) stem cross-section — roll a stem between your fingers to check; true grasses have round stems
- Patches often correspond with areas of poor drainage or excess soil moisture**Field check:** Pull up a suspect clump and examine the stem cross-section — if triangular rather than round, and the leaf bases show a three-leaved arrangement, this confirms a sedge rather than a grass. Check for the characteristic globular seed head, which is a reliable identifier when present.

**Lookalikes:** Nutgrass (*Cyperus rotundus*) is a similar sedge but produces reddish-brown seed heads on a branched umbel rather than a single rounded head, and forms underground tubers (nutlets) rather than relying solely on rhizomes. Common couch grass (*Cynodon dactylon*) can be confused at a glance due to similar growth habit, but has round stems and lacks the distinctive seed head structure of Mullumbimby couch.
