# Moss

> Moss (Bryophyta) forms soft green mats on damp soil, turf, pots and hard surfaces. Identify conditions that favour moss, including shade, compaction and poor drainage, then improve drainage, air movement and plant or turf cover.

*Bryophyta*

Moss is a primitive, non-flowering plant lacking true roots, stems or a vascular system. It anchors itself with fine, hair-like rhizoids rather than roots, and absorbs water and nutrients directly through its leaf-like tissue. Colonies form as dense, low-growing green mats or cushions only a few millimetres to a couple of centimetres tall, made up of tiny, tightly packed leafy stems. Under moist conditions, small capsule-like spore structures may appear on thin stalks above the mat, releasing spores that spread the colony to new areas.

In Australian turf and garden situations, moss develops wherever grass or groundcover is thin, weak or absent, allowing light to reach bare soil while conditions remain damp. It is commonly found in shaded lawns under trees or buildings, in areas with poor air movement, on compacted or poorly drained soil, and on surfaces that stay wet for extended periods, such as paths, pot surfaces and garden beds. It can appear at any time of year but spreads most rapidly during cooler, wetter months when turf growth slows and competition from grass is reduced.

Moss itself does not root into or parasitise plants; it is an opportunist that fills gaps left by weak turf or bare, moist ground. Its presence is generally a symptom of underlying site conditions such as excessive shade, poor drainage, soil compaction, low soil fertility, incorrect mowing height or acidic soil pH, rather than a primary pest problem.

Management focuses on correcting these underlying conditions rather than treating moss in isolation. This includes improving light penetration by pruning overhanging trees, improving surface and subsurface drainage, aerating compacted soil, adjusting mowing height and frequency to encourage denser turf, correcting soil pH and fertility based on soil test results, and reducing excess irrigation or standing water. Encouraging vigorous, dense grass growth is the most effective long-term way to prevent moss from re-establishing.

## How to identify

- **Visual signs:** Low, dense green or grey-green mats or cushions forming on soil surface, thin turf, garden beds, paths or pot media, often in patches that expand over time.
- **Location pattern:** Concentrated in shaded, damp or poorly drained areas, under trees, near downpipes, or where turf is thin from wear, compaction or low fertility.
- **Texture check:** Moss feels soft and spongy underfoot compared with grass, and can be lifted or peeled away from the soil surface in sheets, revealing fine rhizoids rather than a true root system.
- **Field check:** Rub or scrape a small patch — moss lacks the fibrous root mass of grass and will separate easily from the soil, distinguishing it from thin but still-rooted turf.
- **Lookalikes:** Liverwort can form similar low, green mats in wet, shaded areas but has a flatter, ribbon-like or lobed thallus rather than moss's fine, leafy stems. Algae can also form a green scum or film on wet soil or turf surfaces but appears slimy and lacks the upright, leafy structure of moss.
