# Couch Fly

Couch fly is a general term used in Australian turf management for a complex of small flies whose larvae attack couch grass (Cynodon dactylon and hybrids), including species associated with the genus Delia and various Chloropidae. These are separate fly groups rather than a single pest species, but they cause similar damage patterns in couch turf and are often grouped together in the field because diagnosis to species level is difficult without laboratory identification.

Adult flies are small, generally 3-6mm long, slender-bodied, and grey, brown or yellowish depending on the species involved. They are weak fliers often seen resting low in the turf canopy or flushed out when walking through affected areas, particularly in the warmer part of the day. The larvae are the damaging stage: small, legless, creamy-white to yellowish maggots typically only a few millimetres long, tapering at the head end. They live and feed within the stolons, crowns and sometimes the base of leaf sheaths of couch grass, tunnelling internally rather than feeding externally, which makes them hard to see without dissecting affected runners.

Couch fly activity in Australia is most commonly reported through the warmer months on couch turf under stress, including sports fields, golf course fairways and tees, and amenity turf that is compacted, low in fertility, or subject to drought or heat stress. Populations can build where turf is already weakened by other factors, and damage is often most visible where multiple stresses overlap.

Management relies on maintaining turf vigour through balanced fertility, adequate irrigation and reducing compaction, since healthy, actively growing couch can better tolerate low-level larval feeding. Regular monitoring during the growing season helps catch build-ups early, and cultural practices that promote recovery, such as topdressing, aeration and overseeding of thin areas, support turf in outgrowing damage. Chemical control options should be matched to confirmed larval presence and current APVMA registrations for turf situations.

## How to identify

- **Yellowing or thinning patches** in couch turf, often irregular in shape and slow to green up compared with surrounding healthy grass.
- **Weak or dying stolons** that pull away easily from the soil, with internal tunnelling visible when runners are split open.
- **Reduced turf density and vigour** under otherwise adequate irrigation and fertility, particularly in warmer months.
- **Field check:** collect suspect stolons and crowns from the margin of affected patches and split them open with a blade or fingernail to look for small creamy-white larvae feeding internally; adults can sometimes be seen resting in the canopy or flying up when the area is walked over.
- **Lookalikes:** couch mite causes similar yellowing and thinning but produces a distinctive tufted, rosetted growth at stolon tips rather than internal tunnelling. General drought or nutrient stress can also mimic early symptoms but will not show larvae inside the stolons when checked.
