# Common Liverwort

> Common liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) forms flat, green mats on wet nursery media, pots, benches and paths. Identify forked lobes and cup-like structures, then manage surface wetness, drainage, irrigation, airflow and sanitation.

*Marchantia polymorpha*

Common liverwort is a primitive, non-vascular plant that forms flat, green, ribbon-like thalli rather than true leaves and stems. The thallus is lobed, strap-shaped and grows in overlapping rosettes or mats pressed close to the surface of the growing medium or soil. Its upper surface has a distinctive pattern of small diamond-shaped or polygonal segments, each with a tiny pore, giving it a scaly or crocodile-skin appearance. Small umbrella-shaped structures (gemma cups and reproductive stalks) may appear above the thallus, producing spores and gemmae that spread readily by water splash, wind and contaminated tools or media.

It attaches to the surface with fine, hair-like rhizoids rather than a true root system, so it spreads horizontally across pots, trays, benches and garden beds rather than penetrating deeply.

Liverwort is common throughout Australian nursery and propagation areas, particularly in glasshouses, shadehouses and container production where irrigation is frequent and drainage is slow. It appears year-round in protected environments but is most vigorous in cool, humid, low-light conditions typical of autumn, winter and early spring in temperate regions.

Management relies on reducing surface moisture and improving light and airflow around containers. Correcting overwatering, improving media drainage and container spacing, removing algae and moss films, and maintaining good sanitation between crops (clean benches, trays and tools) all help suppress establishment. Physical removal of thalli before gemma cups mature reduces spore and gemmae spread.

## How to identify

- Flat, green, lobed patches forming a continuous mat over the surface of potting media, garden beds, gravel paths or bare soil in shaded, moist areas.
- Surface of the thallus shows a fine diamond or scale-like pattern when viewed closely, distinguishing it from mosses or algae.
- Small umbrella-like stalked structures rising above the mat indicate reproductive stages producing spores and gemmae.
- Affected containers may show poor water penetration, waterlogged media, and reduced seedling emergence or establishment where the mat smothers the surface.
- To confirm identification, lift a section of the mat: liverwort has fine rhizoids anchoring a flat ribbon-like body, unlike moss, which has true (if simple) stems and leaves and a more feathery, upright growth habit.
- Algal scums are slimy, lack the lobed thallus structure, and do not form the characteristic scaly surface pattern seen in liverwort.
